"Can you figure out how to make one out of chainmaille?" -Purple
March 17, 2019, I was approached by a SCAdian friend, commissioning a medallion for a recipient of the East Kingdom award of the Silver Brooch. It is an art award, given to those who display skill(s) in an area of Arts & Sciences. The most deserving gentle, also a friend, and one who has helped me in my chainmaille journey, was to receive the award in camp at Pennsic XLVIII, but Their Majesties jumped the gun, and the medallion was not yet complete for presentation. I was finally able to connect with my friend and present it to him this weekend, February 28th, 2020 at the East Kingdom Arts & Science Championship... which was rather fitting.
While chainmaille jewelry is not historically period, some of the methodology is. I work exclusively in what is referred to as "butted maille", which means that the two ends of the rings butt up together to make a closure of a circle. This style of weaving can be dated back into Norse era, with extent examples being found.
