Pennsic XLIX: University Class instructor - Intro to Chainmaille

  • Class: Intro to Chaimaille: 1-in-1 and 2-in-2 Weave
    Description:

This is a beginner friendly class, with no prior experience needed.  While chainmaille is typically viewed as armor that knights used to wear, over time, it has evolved to have many uses, including jewelry!  Participants will learn One Ring At A Time (OORAT) methodology to create a basic chainmaille bracelet based on a find from Finland, 9th-10th century.
The first part of this class teaches how to open and close jump rings.  Once students are comfortable with the technique, we will move forward and create a chain of 2-in-2 links.  This is a versatile weave, that is found in period, and can be used to hold your Pennsic medallion!  If project is not completed, students will be able to take rings to finish their chain.
We will be using grade 5356 Aluminum jump rings, as it is considered hypoallergenic and can be worn by most people.  It is also a lightweight, softer metal, making it easy to work with.
Please note: while there will be plenty of aluminum jump rings available, pairs of pliers will be limited.  If you have chisel nose, flat nose, or chain nose pliers, please bring a pair for each hand!
